TUCSON- A historic elementary school in the Flowing Wells Unified School District is getting a makeover.
Walter Douglas Elementary was built in 1963, and now final design plans are being drawn to create a new modern facility while recognizing the past.
The district’s superintendent David Baker said the school renovations will be funded from a voter-approved bond back in 2017 and will be used to improve the school’s amenities.
“These buildings were never built with air conditioning for example so we have to retrofit them with air conditioning and really get some efficiencies with the new building,” said Baker.
He said through forums the school district has been able to hear community concerns and have applied them to the renovation plans.
“We are trying to recognize issues the community has shared with us, particularly around traffic and the history of the buildings,” he said.
Clark said that the project costs just under $14 million and will retain two buildings.
The district plans to begin construction this summer.
